Abstract
AI in medicine holds immense promise, improving clinical outcomes and transforming administrative workflows. While improving patient outcomes is the ultimate goal, the greatest immediate impact may come from rethinking workflows to enhance efficiency and satisfaction if systems are deployed safely, effectively and ethically.
Yet major challenges remain. Predictive models and large language models (LLMs) demand continuous monitoring, contextual understanding and thoughtful integration. Without oversight, they risk false alarms, unnecessary interventions and rising costs. While early deployments show gains in efficiency and user satisfaction, real-world adoption is hindered by performance variability, limited generalizability, regulatory delays and a lack of post-deployment monitoring.
Ethical concerns are equally critical. To avoid reinforcing health disparities, we must implement rigorous bias audits, transparent safeguards and a healthcare-for-all design. Ethical AI is not optional; it is a scientific and moral imperative.
A leader in this domain, Dr. Girish Nadkarni will discuss the complex optimization of harnessing AI’s potential to improve care while managing risks and ensuring equitable outcomes.
Speaker bio
Dr. Girish N. Nadkarni is the system chair of the Windreich Department of Artificial Intelligence and Human Health, the first ever AI department within a medical school in the country. He is the director of The Hasso Plattner Institute for Digital Health at Mount Sinai and the chief AI officer of the Mount Sinai Health System, as well as the Irene and Dr. Arthur Fishberg professor of Medicine and professor of Surgery at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and the Mount Sinai Health System.
He received training in mathematics before completing his medical degree at one of the top-ranked medical colleges in India, then received a Masters in Public Health at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore, and then was a research associate at the Johns Hopkins Medical Institute.
Dr. Nadkarni completed his residency in Internal Medicine and a clinical fellowship in nephrology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. He then completed a research fellowship in personalized medicine at the Charles Bronfman Institute of Personalized Medicine.
He has authored over 300 peer-reviewed scientific publications, including ones in the New England Journal of Medicine, Journal of American Medical Association, Annals of Internal Medicine, The Lancet and Nature Medicine. He has received many awards including the best outgoing senior resident award, Dr. Harold and Golden Lamport research award, the ANIO rising star award and the Deal of the Year award at Sinai Innovations. He is the principal investigator for several NIH-funded grants. Dr. Nadkarni is also the scientific co-founder of several investor-backed companies, two of which are publicly traded.
