Abstract

Many important healthcare applications like matching patients to clinical trials, applying the right clinical guidelines, patient risk stratification, and real-world data curation depend on understanding the full history of a patient. For a complex patient this may include thousands of pages of texts, hundreds of medical images and lab results, and many thousands of FHIR or structured records. This talk surveys the current state of the art of how AI systems tackle different parts of this challenge, from information extraction and de-identification to clinical reasoning and conversational Q&A, along with real-world systems that put the technology to use in oncology and psychiatry.

Speaker bio

David Talby leads John Snow Labs and Pacific AI, helping companies apply artificial intelligence to solve real-world problems in healthcare and life science. He has extensive experience building and running web-scale software platforms and teams – in startups, for Microsoft’s Bing in the US and Europe, and to scale Amazon’s financial systems in Seattle and the UK. David holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science and Master’s degrees in both Computer Science and Business Administration.
