Abstract

Generative AI (GenAI) is already beginning to transform medical education and can be a valuable tool to medical educators to design educational experiences and instructional materials. However, medical educators must learn how to effectively engage with GenAI models like ChatGPT if they are to successfully leverage these tools for their own educational practice. In this session we will introduce examples of how GenAI is being applied to the medical education context, discuss strategies for engaging learners and medical educators with GenAI, and offer practical tips to help medical educators effectively engage with GenAI models through text-based prompts and “GPT-builders” for instructional design purposes. Upon completion of this session, attendees should be better positioned to incorporate GenAI into their own educational practices and instructional contexts.

Speaker bio

Taralyn (Tari) Tan, PhD is the Assistant Dean for Educational Innovation and Scholarship in the Office for Graduate Education and a Lecturer on Neurobiology at Harvard Medical School. A neuroscientist by training, Dr. Tan is core faculty in the HMS Master of Medical Sciences in Medical Education (MMSc MedEd) program, directing the “Teaching 100: Theory and Science of Teaching and Learning” course and acting as the thesis advisor for committee member for multiple MMSc MedEd students. She incorporates genAI into her own teaching and scholarship and is PI for an educational innovation award at HMS to develop a genAI-based tool to evaluate and create evidence-based course syllabi.
